I once took a coach from Taipei to go back to my university in southern Taiwan. The long journey resulted in the first “jaw-dropping” experience of my life. After getting off the coach, I foolishly rushed to a restaurant; I was hungry, but I found that I could not open my mouth! This subsequently occurred to me a couple more times when I took long-distance trips in a coach. I would often recover from it the next day; therefore, I didn’t pay too much attention to it! It has been ten years since I graduated from university. Occasionally I would wake up and have difficulty opening my mouth. On one occasion, this condition did not subside for several days, so I went to receive traditional Chinese massage treatment. A senior masseur fiddled around for a long time but to no avail, which caused me a lot of pain. In the end, I was only able to open my mouth a little. The pain did not subside until several days later. Since then, I have decided to just wait for my jaw to return to its position by itself.
Since the start of this year, this ailment has occurred more frequently and the recovery speed has slowed down. Before the Dragon Boat Festival, my right jaw became dislocated. I couldn’t brush my teeth, nor could I bite delicious food freely. Every day, I looked forward to the next morning when I would finally be able to open my mouth. However, one week passed and my jaw had still not returned to its position; I was so frustrated and didn't know where to find help.
After doing some online research, I understood that what I had contracted was TMD. According to some articles, patients with severe TMD needed to undergo facial treatments. I panicked and thought to myself, “are there really no alternatives?” I did not want to take Western medicines or go through surgery! After reading articles found via Google search, I discovered that many TMD patients had been cured by Dr. Wen. Was it really that magical? Having been distraught with worries, this seemed to offer a ray of hope. I decided to try it!
After arriving at the clinic, I registered at the reception. I then noticed that many patients, standing or sitting, regardless of their genders, had several fine needles inserted in their faces or heads. This gave me a sudden urge to chicken out of the treatment. However, since the pain from not being able to open my mouth had troubled me for so long, I decided to bite the bullet and stayed. Restlessly, I walked into the clinic room and described my symptoms. With composure and confidence, Dr. Wen said “Leave it to me!” Then, he started to insert needles in a leisurely manner. I was eager to see my illness cured immediately. I gritted my teeth and received the first needle in my scalp; however, the miracle did not happen straight away. The amount of money I had to pay was jaw-droppingly high (although my jaw had already dropped and had not returned to its position yet!). The out-of-pocket medical fee was so expensive!
After going home, I went to sleep with many doubts in my mind. Upon waking up the next morning, I heard two cracks and my jaw finally returned to its correct position. How magical these needles were! On my second visit, I couldn’t stop myself from asking Dr. Wen to also treat my long-standing thumb injury, which had occurred during a golf training course many years previously (fortunately, there was a discount if you wanted treatment for more than one ailment!) After receiving two treatment regimes, my jaw was no longer dislocated and my thumb was fully recovered! I am very grateful to Dr. Wen for curing my enduring and troublesome ailments with his magic needles!
